Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar are likely to visit here this month. The Prime Minister will inaugurate an international Internet gateway from Bangladesh and will be accompanied by Tendulkar to open a sports complex at NIT, Agartala. The international Internet gateway to India, which will cater to the needs of the entire Northeast, is routed through Akhaura checkpost, 2km west of Agartala. The Internet gateway, which is connected by submarine cable from Cox's Bazar port in the neighbouring country, has already reached Akhaura checkpost on the Bangladesh side but the BSNL authority on this side of the border is yet to complete the lane-laying work. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikha Hasina is also expected to attend the inauguration of the Internet gateway at Akhaura checkpost. During Modi's visit to Bangladesh in June this year, BSNL officials accompanying him had proposed to extend the submarine cable line during bilateral discussions with their Bangladesh counterparts, who readily agreed and work started immediately. Sachin Tendulkar Sources in the BSNL here said they have already received confirmation of the Prime Minister's visit but the detailed programme schedule was yet to arrive. A senior BSNL official said they had nearly completed the connectivity work from its Agartala head office up to Akhaura checkpost. "A few things remain to be completed. We are awaiting the arrival of some equipment. These will arrive soon and then we will complete the work on an emergency basis," the BSNL official said, adding that the Internet connectivity to be available through submarine cable from Bangladesh would sharply increase speed and stability of Internet connection 24x7 and would enable easy transaction of all Net-based works. Net connectivity will be made available to the entire Northeast through optical fibre cable. The official, however, expressed concern over the recent devastating floods in Chennai that has affected the BSNL's telephone network, including towers. "This may take some time to restore but once it is done we will be ready for the inauguration," he added. Modi will also inaugurate a massive sports complex at NIT, Agartala, during his visit. Sachin Tendulkar will be present at the inauguration. It will be his maiden visit to Tripura. Highly placed sources in NIT said Tendulkar had accepted the invitation. "We will inform him once we receive the Prime Minister's programme schedule. Tendulkar has assured us that he will come," a source said.
