For the better part of the time in post-independence India, the North-eastern part of the country has been treated as if it wasn’t even a part of our country. Development didn’t reach the states and they were practically disconnected from the rest of the country.

But in the recent years, after the 2014 general elections, this was rectified and steps were taken to bring the people in the north-eastern region closer to the rest of the country and provide them with better lives.

Most people will tell you about what has been done for the infrastructure of these states and what’s been done for the lives of people outside their houses but they won’t tell you how steps have been taken to have an impact on the individual lives of the people inside their houses. This is what this article is about- how development and some major government schemes have improved the quality of life of the people in all these states.

One of the biggest initiatives taken by the Modi government not only in the north-eastern region but the entire country is “Swachh Bharat Mission”. Given the disease burden due to improper sanitation, it was necessary to build toilets. The condition before 2014 was dismal with sanitation coverage ranging from 40-60% in most North-eastern states. Today, all these states have been declared Open Defecation Free and have 100% sanitation coverage.

Apart from this, the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana has helped in building 4 times more rural houses in just a period of five years. This table shows the data more accurately-

Houses constructed from 2010-2011 to 2013-14

Houses constructed from 2014-15 to 2018-19 (as on 14th Feb 2019)

A roof over one’s head is everyone’s basic requirement. It was ironical that previous governments merely talked of house construction but never really bothered about executing their tall promises.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, over 28,72,373 connections have been provided as on 14th February 2019 to families to get better conditions for cooking which are safe and healthier options as opposed to burning coal or wood which emitted toxic fumes. With the provision of LPG connection, it’s been made sure that every woman who cooks is safe from asthma and other problems as well.

A hundred percent result has been achieved in providing electrification to all homes under the Saubhagya scheme so that every person has proper access to simple utilities which can be accessed by electricity. Not a lot of people might realize this but the provision of electricity makes so many things possible like studying, working (in or out of your house), and so many other simple aspects of life, which would be disastrous trouble if it wasn’t for electricity. These problems have been solved for the north-eastern region only after the government took the initiative and ensured a 100% electricity rate.

As on 14th February, a total of 1,73,17,204 bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. There are so many benefits they can get now whether for government schemes or banking schemes, all because a bank account was made possible on zero balance also. Having discussed bank accounts, it should also be considered that Direct benefit Transfer has been made widely popular in these regions and now 4.87 crore transactions have been made amounting to a total of Rs. 6053 crores. Apps like BHIM/UPI have been encouraged in the whole nation and these have brought a huge wave of online transactions stimulating cashless exchange of money.

Another big achievement has been the sanctioning of Mudra Loans of upto 10 lakh to the non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises. Till 14th February, more than 62 lakh Mudra loans have been sanctioned. These loans make sure that anyone who can dream and has the capability to realise those dreams doesn’t have to worry about money in the beginning because the government will provide them with the money they need depending on how big the endeavour is.

For the first time, the states of Northeast India have been organically integrated with India and a feeling of warmth has been generated. The acceptability of the current ruling party in various state elections in Northeast is a telling story about people’s appreciation for improving their quality of life.
